  • What to do When You Find Out You're Pregnant

Today we are turning our focus to women. Specifically - what to do when you get the hopefully wonderful news that you are pregnant. The first several months of pregnancy are extremely important to the development of the baby. You’ve gotten the wonderful positive pregnancy test, but now what do you do?

    Celebrate

I think one of the hardest things for women to do is to simply celebrate. We automatically begin thinking a million “what ifs” in our brain instead of realizing just how exciting of a time this can be in your life. It is a good thing to be “cautiously optimistic” but it’s also okay to go out and have a celebratory dinner with your significant other! Enjoy the moment.

Make an Appointment with Your OB

Go ahead and call your OB to make your first appointment. Most OB’s don’t have you come in until around 6-8 weeks, but some will have you come in to run a blood test and other routine blood work. This can also help to alleviate some of the unknown and confirm that you are in fact pregnant. It also gives you something to focus on.

    Quit Bad Habits

If you are a smoker or drinker, it’s time to put it to the side. These can both harm the forming baby, and the first weeks are so important. Obviously, if you do any type of drugs it’s also important to quit these as well. Remember – the health of your baby needs to be the focus.

    Clean up Your Diet

What better motivation to clean up your diet than a growing baby? Focus on making little changes, cut down on caffeine, eat whole foods, healthy fats, and lots of vitamins and minerals. Not only will this make you feel better as your body goes through a lot of changes, but you will ensure that your baby is getting everything it needs.

    Find a Prenatal

If you weren’t already taking a prenatal while you were trying to conceive, now is the time to get one! Your baby needs essential vitamins and minerals, especially folic acid, during this time and a prenatal is a great way to do that. If you are finding that your prenatal are making you nauseous during these early weeks, try taking it in the even before bed and make sure to take food along with it.

Most of all, relax. There are a lot of things that can happen but this is a time to enjoy and soak in the moments! Take care of yourself but enjoy every moment!
