  • Tips for Race Day Success


    Today is race day. As runners, it is the day that we have trained for month after month. The hard work, the early mornings, the late nights – this is the day that you’ve worked for. While you can’t ensure you are going to have a perfect race, there are things you can do to help set yourself up to running the smartest race which will put you in the best position possible to succeed.

    Make a Race Plan

    While it may seem that you just go out and run, if you want to run a certain time then having a race plan is a very important part of it. This includes knowing how you are doing to fuel, what paces you are going to run and when, and really look at the race map to determine how the terrain could affect your performance.

    Break Up the Course

    This is especially important if you are running longer races. You can’t focus on how far you have to go, you have to break up the race into smaller sections in your head. Check out the elevation ahead of time and determine where are going to be your harder sections. Make your race plan focused on small sections.

    Have your Fuel Plan

    While shorter races may not need any additional fuel plan, if you are running something such as a half or full marathon then it is important to have a plan on how you will fuel. If you have gus, or shot blocks, it’s important to have them read and easily accessible. Also have a plan on when you are going to take them. Make sure you are taking them early enough to become affective. They will take about 30-45 minutes to get into your system.

    Eat What Works for You

    Race day nutrition is essential but it can vary drastically by the individual. Some people can stomach a lot of food the morning while others have to stick to a liquid diet. Make sure this is something you are testing during your training, and do what works for you. Don’t just try something because it works for someone else.

    Don’t Try Anything New

    You would think this would be common sense, but you’d be amazed how many people try something new on race day. Make sure you have tried out all your clothing, shoes, and fuel prior to your race day. Stick to those things and don’t add anything you haven’t tried before.

    Finally, have FUN! Don’t make a race stressful. At the end of the day the most important thing you can do is relax and have fun.
