  • Why You Should Add Chickpeas Into Your Diet Today!

    I love chickpeas! They are a great snack, an amazing filling to foods like salads and they are the main ingredient in one of my most favorite snack (condiment?), Hummus!

    Chickpeas, also known as garbanzo beans are incredibly nutritious and a great source of plant-based (vegan/vegetarian) protein. They are also high in fiber and a bunch of other vitamins and minerals. Do yourself a favor and pick up a couple of cans tonight!

    Why do I love them?

    High in fiber
    I am a big ‘snacker’. I can control my main meals but it's the snacks that get me. Chickpeas (even in hummus form) make a great snack that helps keep you full for a long period of time as they are high in fiber. Roast them, salt them and enjoy as a late night snack. 1 cup of chickpeas contains around 12 grams of fiber. That’s half of an adult's daily allowance and let’s be honest, these days, not a lot of people eat enough fiber.

    We all know and love protein. It's what rebuilds our muscles, helps us recover and keeps us satiated when we’re on a diet. One cup of them contain 15grams of protein. Yep, the same amount as a half scoop of protein powder at only 270 calories. Try adding a handful to your salads to really up the flavor and texture.

    High in minerals
    One cup of chickpeas contains around 450mg of Potassium, 80mg of Calcium, 80mg of Magnesium among a number of other vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin K, Folate, B6, Copper, Manganese, Zinc, Phosphorus and Iron. Talk about a natural multi-vitamin!

    Keeps the heart healthy
    Fiber, especially the type found in beans and peas is known to fight heart diseases and keep the heart healthy by balancing out cholesterol levels (lowering LDL and increasing HDL) and by clearing up any plaque build-up in the arteries. They also help to keep a healthy blood pressure which reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Make sure to eat at least one serving of them a day to stay out of the doctor’s office!

    As I said earlier, chickpeas are used to make hummus. I love hummus as a snack or as a side to my main meals. Try combining hummus with some ground beef and bread and you are in heaven, my friend. If you want really good hummus, it's best to make it yourself as you know exactly what is inside it. Stay away from the store bought junk.

    Hummus Recipe
    • 1 can chickpeas
    • 2tbsp tahini
    • juice of 1 lemon
    • 1tsp cumin
    • 1tsp salt
    • 1tsp paprika
    • 1tsp cayenne
    • 2 cloves garlic.
    • 2tbsp olive oil

    Combine everything in a blender and blend to your desired consistency.
