  • Do You Know Your Body Type?

The concept of somatotypes, or body types, has been around since the 1940s. Originally introduced by Dr. William H Sheldon, this theory included 3 distinct body types; Endomorphs, Mesomorphs and Ectomorphs. Knowing your body type is critical for achieving your fitness goals because it can have a direct impact on fat loss and muscle growth.

It is my hope that this article will help you determine what your body type is without the need for crazy calculations and long math formulas. In most cases, there are tale-tell signs that can help easily distinguish your body type from the others. These are the 3 body types and what makes each of them different:

    Endomorphs
This body type typically has trouble losing weight or struggles with gaining weight easily. Endomorphs will typically carry a large bone structure that is accompanied by a wider waist. Unfortunately, this means that you are more likely to store fat and building muscle will be much more of a struggle.

    Mesomorph

If you fit into this body type, consider yourself very lucky. Mesomorphs typically will have a medium bone structure accompanied by a narrow waist and wider shoulder. This body type naturally has low fat levels and can easily pack on muscle without extra effort required for most body types.

    Ectomorph
If you have ever considered yourself a hardgainer, you are most likely an Ectomorph. This body type has trouble gaining both muscle and fat because they naturally have low fat storage. If you are long-limbed and naturally slim, this is likely your body type.

No matter what body type you fit into, it shouldn't be used as an excuse for not making progress. Once you know what your body type is, do your research and find out how to make your body type work for you. Once you do this, determining how to make progress will become much easier.
