  • Is Alcohol Sabotaging Your Fitness Goals?



    Whether you are in a social setting or need to unwind from a stressful day, it can be incredibly easy to seek solace from the comfort of a bottle of your favorite alcohol. If you can stop at just one drink then this might not be much of a problem but the vast majority of us can't. Unfortunately, this can lead to binge drinking or you drinking large quantities of alcohol which can negatively impact your fitness goals or derail your progress completely.

    Alcohol is full of empty calories and can quickly rack up to throw off your entire day with even minimal indulgence. On average, a single shot of 80 proof vodka can contain 97 calories while 86 proof whiskey contains 105. These calories can quickly add up and when they kick in as your inhibitions are lessened can lead to not only more empty calories from alcohol but poor food choices as well. Essentially this can ruin an entire workout or caloric deficit for the day.

    If you are currently dieting, the effects could be even more detrimental. Even though certain low carb diets allow you to drink straight liquor throughout the process, the body has to put fat burning on hold to process the alcohol because it perceives it as a poison that has entered the body. To make matters worse, your tolerance can slip greatly while on a diet leading to even more poor decisions.

    Don't get me wrong. I'm not implying you should never drink again to ensure you stay on track with your fitness goals; however, it is important to ensure that you are drinking responsibly to continue to see results. Take the time to unwind with your friends every once in a while at a social event but know when it's time to stop to ensure you don’t derail your fitness goals.
