  • Cellulite: What Is It, And How Do We Get Rid Of It

For many women, the struggle is real when it comes to dealing with cellulite. In fact, studies show that 80-90% of all women are affected by cellulite.

Cellulite is pretty easy to understand. Think of your skin.. Under the dermis layer of your skin there are connective fibers. These fibers run vertically (in women) and anchor the dermis layer to the muscle tissue below it. In between the dermis layer and the muscle tissue, there are fat lobules. These fat lobules are present in everyone and are supposed to be there. However, when the amount of fat in the lobule exceeds the length of the connective tissue, it creates a lumpy appearance on the skin- thus cellulite.

It is important to understand, that having cellulite does not mean that you're overweight. However, if you are overweight the cellulite will be much more visible.

Now that we know exactly what causes these embarrassing lumps and ripples- you must be feeling pretty silly about buying all those lotions, gels and freaky creams that claim to eliminate it, right?

Going back to the above explanation of what cellulite is, I think we can all agree that there are two main ways to get rid of these lumps. 1. reduce the amount of fat in the lobules or 2. lengthen the connective fibers to hold more fat.

Naturally, option #1 is the more appealing of the two. So how do we do that?

As a personal trainer, I am asked this question almost more than anything else. Cellulite is an incredibly annoying and unfortunate reality that plagues women from every stretch of the world. We hate it, we're not sure how we got it, and we definitely want to get rid of it!

In order to do that, I always recommend a combination of diet and exercise. The diet portion can reduce the amount of fat in the lobules and the targeted exercises will build and strengthen the muscle tissue beneath the skin, giving it a firmer appearance.

Generally, people with high carb diets seem to have it the worst. In starting our cellulite elimination process we will need to adjust the amount of carbohydrates in our diet. DO NOT eliminate carbohydrates completely. Instead, aim for healthy carbohydrates like veggies, sweet potatoes and jasmine rice. Avoid bad carbs like potato chips, french fries, sugary candy and soda. Be sure to get adequate amounts of protein- this will help build and repair muscles and is an important part of a healthy and balanced diet. Aim for lean meats, chicken, turkey, grass-fed meat, salmon and veer away from greasy hamburgers and breaded, battered and deep fried chicken. Take in lots of water- water is imperative to all of our bodies processes and functions.

In regards to working out and building those muscles- perform exercises like squats, lunges and hip-lift progressions that target the areas where most of us carry our cellulite.

Remember, these things take time- so be patient and stick with it. I hope this article will help some of you on your quest to be comfortable and confident in your bathing suit this summer.
